Dundret Gällivare to host the 2026 Ski Cross World Cup final
Dundret in Gällivare, Sweden’s most urban-proximate mountain, has been selected to host the 2026 Ski Cross World Cup final, which will take place March 27–29. The decision was made in collaboration with the Swedish Ski Association and the International Ski Federation (FIS). This will be the first time that Ski Cross World Cup competitions reach Sweden’s Arctic region, where the season is longer and more snow-sure.
Pernilla Bonde, Secretary General of the Swedish Ski Association, says in a press release:
“Holding the Ski Cross World Cup final in Sweden is incredibly important for us at the Swedish Ski Association. It gives our athletes the best possible conditions, strengthens the visibility of ski cross nationally, and creates engagement far beyond the competition arena, both nationally and internationally. Dundret and Gällivare taking on the World Cup final shows the strength of Swedish organizers”.
The World Cup final brings together the world’s best ski cross athletes and marks the end of the season for the sport. The competitions are expected to attract both international participants and spectators to Gällivare, and represent a strong boost for both winter sports and the tourism industry throughout Norrbotten.
Michael Lindgren, facility manager at Dundret Gällivare, believes that the opportunity to host this level of sporting event is a great vote of confidence and recognition of the company’s ambitions and long-term work to recreate Dundret and Gällivare as an international winter destination.
“We look forward to welcoming the world elite and creating an event that lays the foundation for the continued development of Dundret as an attractive alpine competition arena”.
The Ski Cross World Cup final will be held the weekend before Easter and will be one of the biggest sporting events of the winter in northern Sweden.
“Events, both large and small, are often crucial for place development because they create meeting places that increase the attractiveness for both residents and potential visitors. This in turn often strengthens visibility, local pride and identity, while the local economy grows”, says Andreas Cederlund, Head of Promotion & PR, Swedish Lapland Visitors Board, and continues:
“The World Cup final is a huge opportunity to highlight the Dundret mountain, the Gällivare community, and the unique added value of our Arctic region nationally and internationally. An international event contributes broadly to various target groups, including potential immigrants, visitors, students, investors, and, not least, the most important – the residents of the municipality and county”.
Markus Tjikkom, Event Manager, Dundret Gällivare, is one of the key people behind the work to convince the Swedish Ski Association of the local competence and ability to create an organizing team with the capacity and experience to handle this major assignment.
“In 1983, Ingemar Stenmark drew large crowds to Dundret, 43 years later it is time again when the World Cup returns to Gällivare”.
“Together with the local and regional business community and associations, we will make these days a celebration for both competitors and visitors from near and far”.
