New direct flight route between Zurich and Luleå

Edelweiss will establish a new route during the winter season 2025/2026. In December 2025, the regular direct route between Zurich in Switzerland and Luleå Airport will premiere.

Once again, the tourism industry’s long-term work to establish new direct routes between our region and the world has borne fruit. Swedish Lapland Visitors Board has worked together with local tourism companies, Luleå Airport, Visit Luleå, Edelweiss and other industries in the region to establish another air route to Europe and the world – with success.

The Zurich-Luleå route is obviously suitable for the Swiss, but also for Germans and Italians who want to experience Sweden’s Arctic destination. Swedes will also have an easier way to travel to Switzerland. In addition, the region’s many international business travelers will have easier and faster travel in winter, which will benefit the ongoing major industrial investments in Norrbotten.

“My colleagues, the tourism industry, and our partners are doing an incredible job of increasing awareness of our Arctic destination internationally. At the same time, several business operators are jointly investing in establishing an international business network of tour operators and agents who can utilize this flight route. These are some of the success factors that have enabled us to now present a new direct flight to and from Europe”, says Annika Fredriksson, CEO of Swedish Lapland Visitors Board.

“Improved accessibility for Luleå is a key factor for the tourism industry to grow. It is an important sector for Luleå to have a good industry breadth and contributes to both a more attractive place to visit and live. It is easy to forget that international guests’ turnover is an export revenue that also generates jobs and tax revenue for welfare”, says Karin Åberg, Business Developer Destination at Luleå municipality and continues:

“With a growing visitor base in Luleå, now is the perfect time to invest in expanding our tourism offerings. We warmly welcome new tourism businesses in both accommodation and activities. And of course, it also gives us locals more opportunities to travel”.

“Holidays in northern Europe have become increasingly popular among Swiss travelers in recent years, and Edelweiss has expanded its range of services to that direction. We are delighted to be able to offer our guests a direct connection to Swedish Lapland for the first time with Luleå”, says Patrick Heymann, Chief Commercial Officer Edelweiss.

The new service will start in December 2025 and will initially operate in the winter season 25/26, with a plan to continue for at least three years. Several tour operators and travel agencies have shown interest in the new route, which will contribute to the growth of the region’s economy.
