Norrbotten as a food destination – a brand new culinary guide is launching soon
Food enthusiasts and travelers seek genuine experiences and authentic flavors – and Arctic Sweden is ready to deliver. A digital and printed guide is now being launched, bringing together the county’s unique and rich Arctic food culture and dining experiences, making it easy for both visitors and locals to find them.
Before summer, a digital map and a physical brochure will be launched, showing where visitors and locals can experience Norrbotten’s unique flavors – from farm shops and microbreweries to restaurants and bakeries, all working with local ingredients and traditional food craftsmanship. This means that whether you want to taste freshly baked goods, local beer, or classic Norrbotten dishes, there’s a clear path to follow.
“We see a strong trend where travelers want to experience the authentic and local. Norrbotten has a fantastic mix of nature, tradition, and innovation, and now visitors will get a simple and inspiring overview of all businesses offering food tourism experiences in the county”, says Linda Norén at Arctic Sweden Visitors Board.
In the guide, dining experiences will be divided into categories to make it easy to find what you’re looking for. The categories may be revised during the process:
- Arctic gastronomy – restaurants that work creatively with local ingredients.
- Culinary experiences – food walks, cooking over fire, workshops, foraging in nature’s pantry.
- Stay & taste – accommodations with a clear food profile.
- Artisan food & farm shops – farm shops and direct farm sales
- Arctic fika – cafés and bakeries
- Arctic food traditions – fermented herring, meatballs, palt, dopp-i-kopp, traditional Swedish fare
- Local drinks & brews – breweries and beverage production
Work is currently underway to gather businesses in the county that operate within the categories above. You can read more about the criteria for participation here. [Link in Swedish]
Taste of Arctic Sweden – Norrbottniska smakvägar [SE] enhance the experience for visitors while giving producers and local businesses increased visibility and the opportunity to reach a broader audience.
“Through coordinated marketing, digital support, and printed guides, we hope to put Norrbotten’s flavors on both the national and international food map and contribute to a stronger local economy”, says Linda Norén.
The digital and printed guide will be available in both English and Swedish. With Taste of Arctic Sweden, it will be easy for everyone to plan their own culinary journey – and discover Norrbotten in a whole new way.
The Norrbotten Culinary Routes/Taste of Arctic Sweden project is run by Arctic Sweden Visitors Board together with Norrbotten’s Food Strategy; Nära Mat.
