The design competition is over – now we know who will create Icehotel 36
Winter may seem a long way off, but work is already underway in Jukkasjärvi on next season’s ice art. The international design competition for Icehotel 36 is over – and now it’s clear who will get to realize their visions in ice and snow.
In total, 29 artists from 10 different countries were selected from 143 entries. In December, the next edition of the iconic hotel will open, where visitors can check into art suites such as “Spaghettification”, inspired by black holes, or “Soap Bubbles” – a world of frozen bubbles.
“To see Icehotel melt away as we select the artists for next year reminds us of art’s ephemeral nature and its power to renew itself. The jury has reviewed 143 fantastic applications, and it’s been a challenge to choose the 16 art projects that will take shape in Icehotel 36. We are now very excited to present them to the world,” says Luca Roncoroni, Creative Director and the head of the jury.
Construction of the seasonal hotel will start in mid-November. When the doors open on 12 December, a 2,800 square meter work of art made of ice and snow will melt back into the Torne River with the spring sun.
SVT documentary about the creation of the ice hotel
For those who want to take part in the process behind the artworks, a documentary will be broadcast on SVT in the fall of 2025. It depicts the artists and the work behind the fantastic art suites created for last year’s edition of Icehotel.
